Vladimir Maydanyuk and Oksana Kalchuk

Odessa, March 2, 2015 – Vladimir Maydanyuk, Medical Colonel, head of the Odessa Military Hospital and Oksana Kalchuk, Lieutenant Colonel of the Medical Service, head of the Odessa Clinical Hospital of the State Border Service of Ukraine held a briefing on the topic “The situation with the treatment of wounded and sick soldiers in Odessa”.

Since the outbreak of hostilities through the hospital went more than two thousand men, were conducted 365 operations, operated 325 fighters. Now in the medical institution are 35 wounded. Guards Hospital helped 75 wounded soldiers. All of them have already been discharged, except for one, located at the re-treatment.

As told Vladimir Maydanyuk, 60% of the wounds at the front – it’s limbs, followed by injuries to the head, neck, chest and abdomen. Soldiers dressed in helmets and flak jackets. Adequately protected the head, thorax and abdomen. There are now vests with collars that protect neck.

Injuries are mainly by mine-explosive fragmentation.

The hospital has all the necessary equipment and medicines for the care and treatment of the wounded. Great help provided by volunteers. Last year, they gave the hospital medical supplies and equipment by 18.5 million UAH, including two modern X-ray machines for 1.5 million UAH each and apparatus for the detection and treatment of injuries from bullets and shrapnel. Already this year, hospital received from the volunteers care of 2.8 million UAH. This money is not superfluous, because there is an antibiotic, one bottle of which costs about 3 thousand UAH, and at the same time, they are vital. One wounded suffered 5 operations. Without the help of volunteers we could not pull him.

Now, according to the head of the hospital, changed the structure of entering treatment. In the summer there was a war, and there were wounded with injuries. Now more patients come for re-treatment and further rehabilitation.

Now many sick men with sciatica, cold, pneumonia. Hospital expanded psychiatric ward, because now a lot of patients with contusions and damages to the psyche. In the treatment of such patients actively help psychiatrists and psychologists from other regions. For the treatment in sanatorium were sent 79 wounded soldiers, treated in the hospital.

In the hospital for volunteers allocated a separate room where they organize and take people on duty. But there were indecent volunteers, who were selling on the territory of the hospital cakes, brought alcohol. All this is suppressed. Every department secured a volunteer, who is familiar to the medical staff office. The problem of interaction with volunteers removed and the situation returned to normal.

Oksana Kolchuk said that for the purchase of new ambulance for hospital, volunteers collected 230 thousand UAH, which is not enough for a new car. Therefore, the car was purchased, suitable for conversion as ambulance. Now ends up buying the equipment and will soon begin its installation in the car.

In Mariupol and other cities along the line of separation, work crews of military surgeons, including 5 teams from Odessa. Besides by the Odessa Medical Military was staffed 61st field hospital in Zaporozhye region. Such outreach is needed in order to provide quality care to the wounded on the spot. They accept and civilian patients. On the basis of the hospital is open 7 Dept. Medical University. Professor advice, treat and operate on the wounded. The hospital has a good interaction with the city and regional health facilities.

In 2007, the military departments had been closed in medical schools. And it was there train specialists in military surgery and therapy. Classes were held on the treatment of combat surgical trauma. Now there is the president’s decision to restore the department and electives in military medical training.

At the hospital were treated the representatives of all the fighting structures and even were treated the wounded separatists.

In Ukraine, now many of the wounded taken to the hospital via air ambulance. The military now has four medical helicopters and one AN-26 “Vita”.

In the first stage evacuation of the wounded was held only by aviation. Now 80% of the evacuation takes place by road.
